Got the Switch 2 Zelda Edition and having a blast with Mario Kart World.

I was worried with all the criticism on Reddit, Lemmy and general on the internet that the game would be such a letdown but I think exactly because of the criticism and that I never really had any expectations that the game is now really fun for me.

I like that the races are a bit chaotic and really love the KnockOut Tour thing. I also like the new animations and the way the game looks.

The only two things that I have to get used two are; the racing feels a bit slower and that drifting seems a little different than the previous game(s).

As for the Switch 2 itself, its nice! But I’ll be purchasing these third party grips. The console feels non-ergonomic (coming from a Steam Deck).

Can’t wait until Ocarina Remake is released and a month or two later will be getting Tears of Kingdom (or Bananza).

I’m also slightly hoping that Nintendo will be making a sequel of Mario Odyssey and Captain Toad Tracker.

The game was always pretty decent, the big hoogabloo was because of the $80 pricetag and Nintendo normalizing that as a standard industry price, which every other major publisher immediately followed.

Same for the Switch 2 in general. It’s not a bad console, but the price ask (console, games, switch 2 update packs) is what made everyone mad because we got so much more for so much less during the DS/3DS and Wii/WiiU era.

Nintendo is a quality developer but they’ve really doubled down on their hubris during the Switch era just because of the sheer amount of money they made, and the money they intend to keep making.

Bananza was great. There’s endless amounts of hate for everything online. Just enjoy it.

Sites like Lemmy and Reddit tend toward the negative because we’ve been told that nothing is perfect so if you can’t find something wrong with something you’re being suckered. Honestly, pretty true in most situations, but I say fuck em.

S2 is great, I think aside from the library situation better pound for pound than a Steam Deck. I’m not really into Mario Kart but for a brief moment playing MKW was a really fresh and fun experience.

But yeah. If you aren’t listening to a real professional critic(not a youtube essayist or independent ‘critic’) or a friend you know pretty well, I wouldn’t take the opinions of anyone too seriously(edit: at least if they’re trying to talk you out of something you enjoy). Especially someplace like Lemmy/Reddit.

Edit: Bananza is my current fav 3D platformer and honestly, the Star Fox 64 remake is legitimately amazing!

      Yeah, that’s very true!

Honestly, I got the Switch 2 because of two reasons; The Switch 2 exclusive games and my mother really loves every Zelda game. We both use the Switch 2.

I get bummed on MKW because I like to see the actual racing arenas and when they change after a lap for some of the other ones, but in this 2/3 of the race are spent in transit sometimes. It just feels like a waste of time. I wish there was a mode without having to drive to the next race, where one could just do their three laps on the actual race way.

My daughter loves MKW, she finds all kinds of stuff to do in it.

I would really love a sequel to Super Mario Odyssey. That game is so rad.

Overall it feels “squishy” to me. But I’m glad you’re enjoying it! I’m one of those people that wasn’t impressed with it, but that’s almost entirely due to MK8 being nearly perfect for a decade before MKW came out. Following that up was always going to be a tough ask.

Yeah, I can understand the feeling of squishy-ness. But after playing MK8D for a very long time, this feels like a breath of fresh air

Don’t sleep on Kirby Air Riders. If you have the means to borrow it from a friend or library, try it out! Especially since you mention you like the chaotic MKW races- the chaos is turned up to 11 in this game.

It’s unfortunately a divisive game, though, where according to everything I’ve read online you either love it or hate it, so I can’t comfortably recommend you drop cash for it without trialing it first. But as a veteran of the original I think it’s brilliant.

Yeah, I had my eyes on Air Riders as well but can’t really figure out whether I’d like it or not. Do you have the game? Could you tell me if you can just race and pick up the turbos etc or do you continually need to pick up stuff to keep the speed up?

Will see if the library has it or I might pick it up if ever a sale comes (or if I have money to spend).

Not sure exactly what you mean by picking up the turbos. But there are 4 main game modes to play. The first is Air Ride, a Mario Kart esque racing mode that is very fun and faster paced than MK. The second, Top Ride, is a top down race on small maps. This is fun as well, but it’s pretty much universally agreed it’s the weakest game mode.

City trial, the third one, is the most popular mode. Players start in a sandbox map on a weak vehicle. You drive around the map picking up power ups to increase the stats of your vehicle. There are also other vehicles around the map that all have different strengths/weaknesses. At the end of 5 minutes, the players are moved to a mini event that they all compete in using the vehicle they built over the 5 minutes. It’s very fast paced, and very fun.

The final game mode Road Trip, is a single player story mode. It has rogue-like elements where you pick between 3 mini challenges pulled from the other 3 game modes. Beating that challenge rewards you with a stat increase for your vehicle and some money for stores you come across. You keep increasing stats and finding new vehicles as you progress to eventually reach the end and take on bosses/harder challenges with your character.

If you have played Sakurai’s games before, this will feel very familiar. There are many aspects of the game that will remind a lot of people of Smash Bros. It is a racing game, but it’s also kind of a vehicle battle game too. I’d definitely recommend picking it up, as I personally find it significantly more fun than Mario Kart World.

The karts more or less move at the same speed consistently, some a bit slower because they are tanker, and some a bit faster. Some have better speed and control in the air (and air control is so much better and more meaningful in this game vs Mario Kart.) Courses often have boost pads for temporary speed increases. But there’s no CC’s like you have in Mario Kart- the game really only has one speed.

If you have the means to play the original GameCube game on an emulator or something, that could also give you a good idea of how the game feels overall. The new one has a faster base speed for everything though.

I love the knockout tour mode. But I wish they would let us turn off the music and roam around the open world to catch the vibes.
