A government-run company in South Africa claims that it has sent the longest freight train ever on a test run.
The longest train in my country is only a couple of hundreds of meters, but it’s much colder here.
how does that compare with snowpiercer?
Not as long
According to Wilford, the train is 10 miles long[2] (“Three thousand souls stufffed into a ten miles steel tube”). This would put the average length of a carriage at 15.56m (10 miles = 16.09km, 16.09km = 16.090m, 16.090m/1034 carriages = 15.56m per carriage).
Train to train the train
But it was empty.
Imagine breaking up that consist, though? Do you start dropping sections off the back miles away from your destination, so that you can all slow down and get to your tracks? They can’t possibly load the cars like that, they’d have to come to a complete stop and start up again for each ar (or set of a few cars, depending on loading equipment).
This is one of the things that’s probably not worth bragging about.
