I find this absolutely hilarious living in northern Ireland and following how these regulations progress. One of the big points of the stupid brexit was that we could set our own regulations and did not need to follow the “crazy” EU rules
The they realised that it is not easy to disconnect the UK from EU due to Ireland, so they need to create workarounds and we start seeing these “not for EU” labels to differentiate products that don’t follow EU regulations from the ones that do and now we are going back to the “Crazy EU rules” 😂😂😂
Britain: We will leave the EU forever.
Good Friday Agreement: Hello there.
Oh, I think they knew about the Ireland problem. Since it was pretty much being shouted about, before during and after the vote. I think the governments (and that’s the sad thing, we went through a few during the process itself) in charge took the stance of “Get brexit done, worry about the rest later”.
Which was stupid. But, again I’m going to point at the characters in charge of the governments at the time(s).
Cameron could have really sewn this up had he not flipped the table and ragequit. Sure the usual noisy tory backbenchers and Farage and co would be up in arms. But Cameron should have just followed the referendum to the letter, and tried (because you know we’d need to apply) to move us out of the EU and straight into the EEA. Really, it would have satisfied the terms of the referendum. Would have had minimal impact in real terms. Would have gotten Farage out of the European parliament (the rest of Europe would thank him for that).
I know people that voted to leave. None of them specifically wanted a hard brexit. The vast majority I asked would actually have been fine with EEA membership.
The “Not for EU” labels reminds me of the history of the “Made in” Labels. https://supplystudies.com/2017/07/26/the-making-of-made-in#an-odious-mark Not exactly the same, but also UK shooting themselves in the foot.
After 10 years, the Brexit footgun is starting to be dismantled. Well, the firing rate is starting to slow anyway.
Finally, some common sense.
Yes, checks article, we really need to be focusing on selling more jam.
