NOTE: This is not a thread discussing modding consoles or anything of that sort. Rather, the main topic is about the recent news on a guy who managed to hack the Switch 2 by adding third party content into MKW (which isn’t natively on the game) all because of a “game” found on the eShop (I think it got removed). He was using the global unit of the console. I’m ordering the region locked variant (日本語・国内専用モデル).

The difference between that and the international models are minor: mainly with the language and eShop, as the region locked one can only be used in Japanese and the JP eShop is only allowed (but would that alone be jail broken with hacks reverting a Japanese language only console adding other language packs basically turning it into a global unit despite this specific model being intended for domestic use only?).

That exploit isn’t a full jailbreak. Basically someone found out to use the SmileBasic game to create a buffer overflow and inject their own program into ram. But still no real way to install homebrew as an app and open up the full Switch 2 for homebrew development . Every home brew program in that hack has to be run via the SmileBasic exploit. So unless you installed SmileBasic before it got removed that exploit is basically closed. And Nintendo is going to patch it anyway.

Not familiar with the Switch 2’s eventual region locks, but are those still a thing? On Switch 1 at least, you just had to change your account region in the settings in some browser, no questions asked. Though it wouldn’t be the first time Nintendo does console 1 without geoblocking, console 2 with geoblocking, and console 2’s backward compatibility without geoblocking (DS & 3DS being the first case).

But some consoles are modded, that’s for sure. Perhaps that would allow investigating further exploits.

Still, console modding that depends on services provided by those not interested in the modding, like the company behind the console itself, is generally not long-lived. So looking at how modding in this era of services usually goes, I’d suggest keeping yours offline, and on the lowest firmware version (“system version”) you can.

At worse, put it online to download the patch for supporting physical Switch 1 games if needed, and figure out how to remove the nagging update message that will keep appearing afterwards (maybe the safe boot option like with the Switch 1 would work?)

There is region locking for the Switch 2 (mainly a separate console variant) as its sold cheaper than the international counterparts, it’s priced at ¥59,980 ($382) while the one from the US is $500 before tax. The reason why they had to region lock the system is the weak Yen, they don’t want foreigners to export them.

The only thing that’s region locked is language: the immediate boot up begins with the EULA in Japanese, leaving no option to change region since its fixed to Japan only or revert to English. You can only sign in using a Japanese Nintendo account and use their eShop, foreign games will work but translate into Japanese.
