politics @lemmy.world•Harris advises Democrats against attempting to impeach Trump
12·2 days agoA lot of people in the country are politically ignorant. They forget quickly. These folks operate with a, “where there’s smoke, there’s fire” kind of politics, so if they don’t hear about things happening, there must not be a problem. The Republicans understand this, which is why they conducted a bajillion useless Benghazi investigations to help foment distrust in Democrats and Hillary Clinton. Those investigations were useless and lead nowhere, but the side effect of talking about it all the time helped the MAGA Republicans gain power.
A third impeachement could serve a similar purpose, if the Democratic Party was willing to actually try to win. An important part of fighting MAGA is by constantly shoving into people’s faces that MAGA are freaks. Democrats should be pointing out the smoke to show there’s a fire.

11·2 days agoThe 2% is the focus of the attacks. They need to be defended because they are being attacked. It would be foolish to just let the fascists divide and conquer without any pushback. There is no benefit to abandoning a part of our coalition because that would simply invite further attacks on our flanks.
As an example, Dems have been experimenting with anti-trans rhetoric because trans folks are being attacked by fascists. Influential consultants have floated the idea that Dems should run anti-abortion candidates to try and get ahead of the fascists attacks.

8·2 days agoAbdul is an example of the ideal “American Story”. Sports captain in high school, Rhodes Scholar, doctor, community leader, public servant. Dude’s jacked and attractive, he’s just not white. MAGA is trying to get people to ignore all that and focus on his name/faith.
It’s upsetting that this is a close race. Racism truly has people in a chokehold.

4·4 days agoThrowing minorities under the bus is such a stupid strategy for Democrats. It depresses voter turnout by signaling the candidate views human rights as negotiable. It doesn’t gain votes because anyone amenable to that viewpoint is already voting MAGA.

51·4 days agoTurek is the one throwing away voters. If folks find it too difficult to bootstrap themselves out of the trash can that’s the candidate’s fault for forcing that decision.
You are focusing on the victims of a fucked up Saw torture conundrum. I would also prefer a Democrat to a Republican, but I find it cruel to tell victims to vote for their continued oppression. This is not the time for Democratic candidates like Turek to be putting on their Jigsaw masks and asking voters if they want to play a game.

Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•Democratic candidate for the senate, Josh Turek, releases an anti-trans campaign ad referring to trans women as "males competing in females' sports."
3·4 days agoMaybe you should just accept that this candidate has lost the trans vote and move on instead of demanding trans people and their allies support their demise. It’s not trans people’s fault this candidate is anti-trans. Don’t go after trans folks just because their voting decisions aren’t “perfect”. When a candidate says he is anti-trans, it seems absurd to castigate trans allies for believing him.
Sure, it’s too late to get a different Dem candidate, but that just makes it more important that the Dem candidate doesn’t make dumbass decisions to needlessly throw away voters for zero benefit. It seems like a bad use of your time to go after the many people in the voter base this candidate is alienating. It would be more efficient to rebuke this single candidate and demand he apologize.

0·4 days agoYou are not correct when you claim that everyone knows what the Republican’s prorities are. One of the big talking points that got Trump elected was “No New Wars”. A lot of people are politically ignorant and need things shoved in their faces. Making Republicans explain why their political leader is vetoing helpful policies is one of the easiest ways to shove politics into people’s faces.
You are correct that these measures won’t pass under Republican control; it would still be helpful polticially. Even if Republicans vote to pass the measures because they know it will be veoted, this will be helpful by breaking the party unity of the Republicans. “Congressman, the President vetoed a measure you supported. Why do you think that is?” is an easy way to force politicans to force themselves to put distance between themselves and the larger party.

2·5 days agoIt’s just consultants. The audience and constituents that are being listened to are just consultants. Most people don’t give a fuck about trans people cuz they are such a tiny minority. Neoliberal consultants have seen the success of conservative culture war narratives and have adopted the, “can’t beat 'em, join 'em” strategy because they don’t want to do the actual work beating culture war narratives would require, which is pushing progressive policies.

1·10 days agoI fully expect Chuck Schumer to use this as a reason why the Democratic Party needs to be more visibly friendly to Isreal. Something like, “If we don’t want Isreal to give money to MAGA, we have to support their genocide.”

AIPAC is the reason Corpo Democrats are still so slow to endorse progressive candidates like Abdul El-Sayed. The Democratic Party should be unified in their support of Dem candidates, but they very much are not solely because of AIPAC and the topic of Isreal.
