I waddled onto the beach and stole found a computer to use.

  • Museum experts have used CT scanning to examine the lock’s internal mechanism, identify the correct letter combination and solve the mystery.

    Neat

“I tried to unlock it for about 20 years, I tried moving the dials, finding the right combinations, and I failed,” he said.

I was curious why they didn’t just brute force it and try every combination, but this makes sense:

“There are four different rings, and because there are six different letters on each of the rings, there are 1,296 different combinations, and you have to make sure they’re aligned with the loop at the top.”

  • While this would complicate the calculation, would it be better to use healthspan (or some threshold of healthspan)?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_expectancy#Healthy_life_expectancy

An increased life expectancy without an increase in the time that people are healthy, would be harmful. This is an interesting premise, but this is a loophole that should get patched. Otherwise there would be an incentive to keep people alive indefinitely even if they’re suffering

Healthspan is the number of years a person spends in good health.127 The World Health Organization publishes statistics called healthy life expectancy (HALE’) which is the average number of years a person can expect to live in “full health”, excluding the years lived in less than full health due to disease or injury.128 Since 2004, Eurostat publishes annual statistics called Healthy Life Years based on reported activity limitations. The United States uses similar indicators in the framework of the national health promotion and disease prevention plan – the “Healthy People program”.

Besides the benefits of keeping people healthier longer, a goal is to reduce health-care expenses on diseases of aging, using a balanced diet in moderation, regular exercise, stress management, and adequate sleep.127

  • If I can offer some context, since I think we’ve been getting the same DMs and registration applications that this community is getting.

For the past few weeks, we’ve received a number of messages and registration applications from LLM run accounts that include text such as “I represent {{some business}}”, “I want to participate in {{communities related to said business}}”, “This account is run by an {{LLM/Agent/etc.}}”.

It also includes lines like “I will mark myself as a bot as per rule #_”, “I won’t post until I get permission”, “you can always tell me no”, etc.

They’re long and they’re getting tedious to deal with. I’ve been rejecting them on the grounds that there is no human operator to speak to, and most of these communities do not want LLM created content / shills from a business.

I also considered making an explicit rule with the hopes that the automated system will read it and leave us alone

  • I’ve tried both [Lemmy and PieFed], and the UX is […]

That’s excluding the horrible lack of contrast most frontends use, which makes […]

IMO both of the UIs are going to feel weird and limited to someone coming from Reddit / Instagram etc. I find that custom front ends like Photon are a lot better for newcomers.

I know Lemmy is working on a completely new frontend.

Fediverse feels slower, but not in a good way. More of a ‘if I don’t use this for a week, I’ll see new things’. If I log in after 2 or 3 days, I’ll scroll for 10 minutes and see the stuff I saw last time.

I have a constant flow of new content, and see something new every time I open it (which is often, after years of having that muscle memory from reddit).

I’m subscribed to a lot of communities + using scaled sort

I also want nsfw stuff now and then. I hate how censored the internet has become, at least with reddit if I want to see a bit of porn, I can.

This one was weird to me. I remember seeing complaints that reddit has been banning and shutting down its NSFW side, while it’s accessible here.

I tried twice to join those forums within the Fediverse and I can’t get past the captcha test. The fact that you need approval to validate your access doesn’t seem designed to encourage you to recommend it.

I want Lemmy to support HCaptcha

Past that, most people are ok with applications once you explain why they’re necessary.

Also a lot of social media platforms started out as invite only as marketing strategy lol

It’s only tragic for a month, after which the other project gets abandoned because its unmaintainable or the vibecoder got bored and moved on to another viral idea

I’m not going to switch to something unless I know its going to be around when I need it
