How completely and utterly expected from vibe modders. It’s that exact kind of business sense that kept their kin away from wholesome modding communities for decades. Now they’re going to hollow them out from within with enshittification. Just like most of the internet.

That sucks. I haven’t been following it, was this a sudden but inevitable betrayal? Was it ever going to be anything else?

It’s a vibe coded project built on Daggerfall Unity, with a bunch of “improvements” and original additions (like a Dwemer shotgun). They also already have an active Patreon and Ko-fi which apparently aren’t enough for their AI tokens so this was the next logical step, I guess.

That was just my guess to be clear. The official line is that the playerbase grew too fast and they need more funds to pay for servers. Whether you believe that or not is up to you but it’s worth mentioning to avoid acting purely on conjecture.

This is why I feel like we need a known, standardised community mod license. Daggerfall Unity uses the MIT license which allows this kind of behaviour. I don’t know how much thought the DFU team put into license selection, but I bet most mod authors spent little time on it. A known license that prohibits commercial exploitation but leaves it open for the community to build on it would be ideal imo.

I do not see any universe where this doesnt end in legal action. I would imagine the people behind this aren’t from a country where copyright law is enforced, because this is monumentally stupid if they are.

I am fairly certain this would be considered a derivative work because it relies on the base content of Daggerfall to function. That or because a court may determine that a “reasonable person” may conclude that it is officially connected or sanctioned by Bethesda. Though I am not a lawyer or IP law expert, so it is possible I may be wrong.

It’s safe to avoid any game that ends in -fall. You can be assured by the title alone that it lacks any creative direction.

I don’t think you can apply this retroactively to a game from 1996, or modern projects directly referencing that name.

That said, I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s noticed this weird trend of -fall in mediocre games! See also -borne, -bound, and the word “rise” anywhere in the title.

Its because Daggerfall is legendary, one of the biggest game maps ever. Similarly so is Bloodborne but for different reasons than size. So people name it close to the popular ones to show up in searches.

Compared to Arena, which is infinitely large, then Daggerfall is only 0% as big. But despite being however many hundred thousand square kilometres it is, it seems empty, since it’s all just meaningless procgen. Morrowind feels much bigger, because it’s actually full of stuff.

You’re right about it being legendary - Ubisoft certainly seem to have been inspired by the enormous map filled with really repetitive quests. But there are more important things than size.

Yeah its just if you search “biggest game map ever” Daggerfall is one of the common games that comes up. Doubt many have played it nowadays.
