Trump administration officials are reportedly floating former Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán for UN secretary-general, potentially backed by the US, Russia and China, though nothing is confirmed and his selection remains uncertain.

Any permanent member of the security council can veto a nomination, so I wonder how Trump plans to convince the UK and France to allow this. Is it possible that he plans to have this nomination defeated, so that the next nomination - the one he really wants - succeeds?

The thing about those threats is eventually you’re going to have to grab the other guy and jump off the cliff just to prove that you would.

and we all know trump always chickens out.

He would still need to convince France and the UK to support (not veto) any subsequent candidates. There’s also no guarantee China wouldn’t veto him due to their ever-growing economic ties to the EU.
