  • Well, I’ve seen all (or nearly all) the Bond movies, but that was a very long time ago, so I’m not really sure how well they aged and which of the early ones are still worth watching.

I’m more familiar with the Brosnan and Craig movies. I think Goldeneye is a sure bet. Great action and a lot of humour.

I love the Craig movies, even the weaker ones, and especially the first: Casino Royale. They do start out with a somewhat different vibe and progressively get more Bond-like. This is intentional, as it is a reboot and Bond picks up his classic characteristics (like ordering Martini shaken, not stirred) one by one during the movies.

The movies also follow a common storyline (sometimes continuing right where the previous one left off), so they’re not really too good to just check out one to see what Bond is about, but I’d still recommend watching at least CR just because it’s so good.

Then there’s Kingsman. Not a James Bond movie, but it captures the feel of the older Bond movies very well.

James Bond is really interesting in that each new actor brings a slightly different approach, so it makes sense to talk about multiple Bonds, even in cases where it’s meant to be a single continuity. And First Light succeeds in making this another such Bond that feels equal to his movie counterpart, while being a new take on the character yet again.

  • I liked the game. Looks great, the characters are fun and so is the gameplay, ignoring a few minor gripes (I did not run into any glaring bugs, even though I played it a lot closer to release).

The only issue is that while the overall story is really solid (and very “Bond”), some twists can be seen a mile ahead, while the characters are completely blindsided. Kinda makes them seem dumb in some respects, even though they are generally hyper-competent.

Just ignore it. The journey is worthwhile, despite some wrinkles.

  • This reminds me how I used to listen to The Beatles as a kid, long before I learnt English. I did know roughly what the songs are about, but I didn’t understand most of the words. I did burn the lyrics deep into my brain by repeat listening, as just sounds.

Then decades later - I’m going somewhere by subway and suddenly I remember She’s Leaving Home and play it back in my head after years of not thinking about it. And I realise I can understand (and remember!) every word as it comes up in mind, truly understanding the song for the very first time.

I ended up bursting into tears right there, since it’s so emotional. That was such a cool experience.
