That term is tricky in the United States, because conservatives use it to mean anybody to the left of center while self-described “liberals” have a lot of smoke for the left but only make excuses for the right.

I have no idea where the “you can just assault people” argument came from. I assumed it’s just a joke. I can’t believe people are seriously arguing against it.

They’re arguing against it because it’s a straw man, and they don’t want to say “Yes, you can defend yourself against a woman who is attacking you”.

He almost got killed! To make it even more bizarre, the assailants were all yelling insults about the guy’s sister, like “Your sister is a whore!” Apparently, if you want to insult somebody in India, you say bad things about their sister.
