Lawyers file opposition to Trump’s request, telling Supreme Court justices they do not need ‘to bail out this president’

E Jean Carroll’s lawyers are fighting Donald Trump’s efforts to toss her $83m damages verdict in the US supreme court, telling the justices that they do not need “to bail out this president from the consequences of his repeated litigation choices”.

Jurors delivered Carroll the huge award on 26 January 2024, less than one year after the journalist and author won $5m in her sexual abuse and defamation case against Trump. The president has repeatedly denied all wrongdoing in relation to Carroll.

Carroll’s legal team on 30 October filed their opposition to Trump’s request that the supreme court consider his appeal of Carroll’s massive win. Among Trump’s legal arguments is a claim that presidential immunity protects him from liability from conduct during his time in office, including 2019 statements in which he called Carroll a liar.

That’s bs he keeps delaying this with endless court bs. What a fucked system to allow this and no surprise the rapist doesn’t want to pay his due.

Convicted rapist, well-documented pedo who openly brags about sexually assaulting women and is well known for stiffing payments is attempting to stiff court ordered payments to victim he raped because he lost the court case.

I know I left out some of the minutiae but that should hit the high points.

I understand that he had to put the money into escrow when he filed his appeal. If he loses, the money goes to her, and he can’t do anything about it.

He paid off the other $5 million judgement. This is a different case that has been on a later timeline.

Indeed. But appeal bond is a standard requirement for any kind of appeal. I expect the $83 million is sitting in a different escrow account right now, waiting to be paid out to the winner.

Right? Why does it seem when someone finally wins a judgement against that asshole it becomes trapped in endless appeals

Because his MO has always been to weaponize the judicial system to the point where the other party either gives up in frustration or can’t afford to continue litigation.

I think this is any rich person’s MO, isn’t it? “Expensive lawyers” are just the ones that kick the ball as far down the road as they can and keep charging six-figure retainers.

Sure, except he has a history of using it to avoid paying contractors for the work they’ve been hired to complete, aside from his criminal charges. Most other rich people will at least honor their side of a contract (citation needed).

I think the Trumps’ finances are much less stable than people assume, so he isn’t just fighting for his reputation (lol).

Whatever, he’s still richer than any of us will ever be.

Nah, he made loads of money in these two years. Trump just doesn’t want to pay her because in his mind that means he lost. It’s all ego at play here, the money don’t even matter.

Trump has always been rich, and despite that, journalists sent increasingly tiny checks to rich people to see who would cash them. Trump was the only one to cash a thirteen cent check iirc. He might not “need” 83 million dollars but letting someone else have it, especially when it means that large numbers of people thinking it proves he’s wrong/lost, is absolutely devastating for him. It’s a combination of greed and ego.

That story always cracks me up because it shows exactly who he is. I’m dirt poor and even I wouldn’t bother to cash a 13¢ check.

He was basically insolvent when he won the first presidency. He is on very solid ground now. The market manipulation via tweeting alone has produced a fortune sufficient for any regular greedy person.

His finances weren’t stable before the 2024 election, but then he found crypto. That helped him stay solvent enough to get re-elected, and then it’s been nothing but grift for the last two years.

The amount of money he’s gotten since his second inauguration is staggering. If you count Kushner, it’s infuriating.
