Technology@lemmy.world•'Minnesota 15' Case Reveals Largest US Government Spying on Left Since COINTELPROEnglish
691·1 day agoThe Trump administration is conducting what some experts believe is the largest government surveillance campaign targeting American leftists in over half a century, deploying undercover agents, drones, financial investigators, and digital monitoring against opponents of President Donald Trump’s deadly immigration crackdown, according to reporting published Wednesday.
Wired reporter Ali Winston examined court records regarding the prosecution of the so-called “Minnesota 15,” a group of activists facing federal conspiracy charges after organizing and taking part in protests and other resistance to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) deadly Operation Metro Surge crackdown in the Twin Cities.

On the original point:
Mathematics during the Golden Age of Islam, especially during the 9th and 10th centuries, was built upon syntheses of Greek mathematics (Euclid, Archimedes, Apollonius) and Indian mathematics (Aryabhata, Brahmagupta). Important developments of the period include extension of the place-value system to include decimal fractions, the systematised study of algebra and advances in geometry and trigonometry.

World News@quokk.au•Russia Loses More Troops in a Month in Ukraine Than USSR Lost in 10 Years in Afghanistan, Stubb Says
30·2 days agoI started looking into this and the headlines are insane when you finally figure out what they’re saying. Russia has lost over one million men. Wtf?
Here is the headline and article explaining how much that is. If you’re skimming, this is what you’ll get out of it:
Russia ‘losing 6,000 more troops in Ukraine each month than it can recruit’
While Russia is still acquiring new battlefield recruits at speed, with an estimated rate of 1,000 a day, in the last two months even this has not been sufficient to replace those killed or injured.
“We estimate that the gap between the number of people Russia is losing to casualties and the number they’re being able to recruit is around 6,000 a month at the moment,” one western official said.
So that means, at the time (August of this year), they were losing 36,000 men a month. This article confirms that 25,000 were killed. Losing can mean taken out of action. This is why I hate headlines and some of these so called journalists.

What’s the other half? I’m not saying they’re all mass shootings or that if you go outside, you’ll get shot. But even just under 50% as non-suicides is a lot of shootings.
Also, I think mass shootings are under-reported. I go through the news every week day and I’m shocked about how many show up that I haven’t heard about.
