If you are doing limited run shows with short season with big names and big money AND you don’t film back to back then wtf are you doing.

They used to knock out 24 episodes a season and now these studios take 3 years to do 11 episodes. Then some new exec comes in and cancels the show after 2 seasons which took 4 years for some reason.

I like the shorter seasons. I like less filler. Just pick up the pace.

      No

Filler episodes helped a lot to deepen characters. In star trek, some of the beat episodes were fillers

        This.

By its name, filler episodes are considered less relevant, but they have more purpose than just increasing the episode counter.

They also allow to explore topics, situations and plots that is not feasible in the main story branch.

Filler episodes are also commonly used as opportunities for new directors to gain experience, even allowing cast members to test the waters.

And the most important, allowing to breathe between heavy and intense main plot episodes.

When someone makes a great work like this, I say let them do it on their terms. If season two sucks then your complaints were warranted. If not, they aren’t imo.

Edit: also how are comparing sitcoms to shows like this which are clearly far higher budget and overall effort in general?

Back in the day, there were some big budget shows like LOST and Heroes which did have ~20 episode seasons with only a few months in between seasons. After the 2007 writers strike and the rise of streaming, that seemed to stop and we got the 8-10 episode seasons with multi year gaps in between.

Supernatural had 23 episodes per season, and only had 3 month delay per season. Shows now have 10 episodes and take years to make is bullshit.

Halfway through LOST, the show runners cut the episode count in half, because they didn’t like all the filler they had to include in season 3.

Lost and Heroes were not as big-budget as you think. Much of the money was spent on doing things quicker, as they only had 5-7 working days to shoot each episode. This meant simpler writing, simpler direction, simpler sets and very samey episodes. The cast and crew were simply fighting to get something in the can, regardless of quality.

The Lost pilot was the most expensive episode of TV ever, at the time IIRC.

That doesn’t mean the whole show was expensive though. I guess wandering around forests in Hawaii isn’t that costly.

Never watched Heroes, but Lost had a pretty noname cast aside from the one hobbit and maybe the guy who played Linus. OK, also Michelle Rodriguez of course but she didn’t last on the show a long time if I remember correctly? And Daniel Dae Kim had a bunch of roles before it but they were all side characters.

Most of the main cast that had to be there nearly every day of shooting consisted of folks who didn’t have to put off other major roles to do it.

And it was a season a year, wdym only a few months between seasons?

What I meant about a few months between seasons was that because there were 20 weekly episodes, the show would be on for about half of the year, and then the hiatus between seasons was only a few months. For example, the Season 2 finale of LOST was on May 24, 2006 and the Season 3 premiere was on October 4, 2006.

I watched like 20 minutes of Lost and that was more than enough. That show is known for being confusing and incomprehensible and imo thought it was being deep but wasn’t. Heroes also seems much inferior in quality to a show like Pluribus.

Some do, like Slow Horses. And a lot of basic cable shows. Unions aren’t keen as it cheats their members out of seasonal pay bumps.

The other danger is when you then shoot two seasons without the benefit of audience reaction to guide the development of the second season, like the recent iterationof Doctor Who.

Human cost? Filming for 16 hour days 6 days a week impacts actors and crews lives.

Most long running TV shows cite this as the reason for losing stars - e.g. Mulder and Scully leaving the X Files.

Show me one “streamee” show as rewatchable as any top ten 20 episode a season syndicated show.

Pick and top ten syndicated show and seelct eight to ten episodes a season that would leave it as well off and respected as it is currently.

I was really disappointed by it as well. The thing that really annoys me is when great scifi concepts and premises get wasted because they develop the show with lazy characters and plot, and that’s entirely how I felt S1 go down.

It’s not good writing for the main character to make a lot of bad choices. Writing a “flawed human being” only goes so far, before your character is acting so improbably idiotically they’re just an avatar of the writer’s need for plot conflict. That’s pretty much what I felt slogging through S1.

Exactly my thoughts, I went back to find my reactions on the subject:

        spoiler

-I have thoughts. Not sure how spoilery they are, but it’s pretty universal to the first 3 episodes Carol, the main character, is either the most panicky or least curious person I’ve ever seen. She makes the worst decisions and asks no questions and it is so unsatisfying. Hard to put my finger on it, exactly.
-Pluribus Episode 4: Hats off to the reigning Can’t Stop Making Dumb Fucking Decisions Champion of the World
-Took 7 Episodes, but the main character finally started being not completely fucking stupid.

It felt like watching two seasons because the second lead character is introduced so late but the plot was just treading water the whole time.

I think the value of the show was the introspection of the characters and the trademark montage sequences.
